Question: Can any type of former law enforcement officer apply for a DPOA scholarship?
Answer: Yes, the scholarships are available to all former law enforcement officers across the country. This includes: city, county, state, federal and correctional officers.
Question: When during the year are scholarships awarded?
Answer: On an as needed basis. Generally, the scholarship committee will meet prior to the spring and fall semester. If an officer has a request that must be acted on before or after those time periods, the committee may hold another meeting.
Question: Can I apply for a scholarship for each semester?
Answer: Yes you can apply more that once a year, but the total amount of the scholarships, per year, is $1,000.00
Question: How will I receive the scholarship money if I’m selected?
Answer: The scholarship will be sent directly to the college or trade school you will be attending and be placed into an account for you to draw from.
Question: How will you notify me if I’ve been selected to receive a DPOA scholarship?
Answer: You will be notified by mail.
Question: Do I have to be currently registered in a college or training program to be eligible for a DPOA scholarship?
Answer: You must be registered in a college or training program prior to being awarded a scholarship.
Question: Are there restrictions on the use of scholarship funds?
Answer: Yes, the scholarship may be used to pay: tuition, books, fees, supplies, required texts, special equipment for disabled officers, transportation to and from school, child care to attend school, tutoring, and room and board. It should not be used for anything else.
Question: Who selects the scholarship awardees?
Answer: The DPOA has established a Scholarship Committee. The members of the committee are the DPOA Board of Directors.
Question: Is there any special criteria, which would make me more/less qualified to receive a DPOA scholarship?
Answer: All retired officers are eligible to receive the scholarship. Special consideration will be given to disabled officers.
Question: Am I eligible to receive a DPOA scholarship if I’m receiving other tuition assistance/scholarships/grants?
Answer: Yes
Question: Do I have to complete a new application every time I apply for another scholarship?
Answer: If you already been selected and have received a scholarship, all you need to do is fill out the online application. Photo, verification of retirement is not required to be submitted with additional applications.
Question: Do I have to send a transcript back to you at the completion of the school year showing my grades?
Answer: Yes, if you have already received a scholarship and are applying for a subsequent scholarship, a transcript is required.
